Digital dentistry has quietly arrived in Pakistan. More clinics are buying intraoral scanners, more labs work in STL, and clear-aligner cases arrive as 3D models rather than plaster. That is progress. But it has created a small, annoying problem almost nobody talks about: where do all these scan files actually live?

For a lot of clinics, the honest answer is "a folder on the reception PC," or worse, "in an email somewhere." The scanner exports an STL, someone drags it into a folder named after the patient, and everyone hopes they can find it again in six months. When the computer dies, so do the scans. That is not a workflow; it is a time bomb.

Scans belong on the patient record, not in a folder

A 3D scan is clinical data, exactly like an x-ray or a treatment note. It should sit on the patient's record, next to everything else about them, not in a parallel filing system only one person understands. When it lives on the record you get the obvious wins: you can find it instantly, it is backed up automatically, and anyone on the team with permission can pull it up, not just whoever is sitting at the machine with the scanner software.

This is the same logic behind keeping digital dental records in the first place. A scan that is not attached to the patient is a scan you will eventually lose.

You should be able to open it without special software

Here is the second half of the problem. Even when clinics do keep their STL files, opening one usually means launching a heavy CAD program on the one computer that has it installed. The dentist wants to glance at the model chairside on a tablet, and cannot, because the software is on a desktop in the back office.

The fix is a viewer built into your clinic software. Open the patient, tap the scan, and it renders in the browser, drag to rotate, scroll to zoom, on whatever device you are already holding. No install, no licences, no "let me go to the other PC." A scan you can only open in one place is barely more useful than a plaster model in a cupboard.

The test to apply: can a dentist standing at the chair, on a tablet, pull up a patient's 3D scan and rotate it in under ten seconds? If the answer involves walking to another computer, your scans are not really in your system.

STL and OBJ, so you never convert files

Dental scans come mainly in two formats. STL is the workhorse: it stores the surface shape of the model and is what most intraoral scanners, aligner tools and 3D printers speak. OBJ is similar but can also carry colour and texture, and some scanners and labs prefer it. If your software only accepts one, you end up converting files, which is exactly the kind of small friction that makes people give up and go back to the desktop folder. Accepting both STL and OBJ means whatever your scanner or lab sends, it just goes in.
